Poem: Road ahead is closed

This was written in September 2004, during my junior year of college. Since I recently posted about swimming, I thought it seemed appropriate to share this now.

I danced in a waterfall,
Swam across the Mississippi,
Was attacked by killer sharks
And rescued by a friendly fisherman,
Spent hours scuba diving
Collecting data for research,
Was caught in a storm
And nearly drowned
All by the age of eight.

When I turned fourteen none of that was possible.
Those rubber rings,
Plastic buckets, and toy boats
Lay cracked
Near the backyard pool.
